A study has been made of the embrittlement of fully hardened 4130 steel in low-pressure, <760 torr, gaseous hydrogen. It was found that the embrittlement was caused by hydrogen-induced, slow crack growth. In the range of temperature from 80° to 25°C, the crack growth rate increased with decrease in temperature; in the range from 0° to −80°C, the rate decreased with decrease in temperature.
